A TEEN ISSUE

Image
A post by Carolina Vasiliu A very common issue for teenagers is their insecurities, more specifically, body insecurities. When boys and girls become teenagers, of course their bodies change, a lot, and it can cause good or bad reactions on them. It depends on how they think about themselves, physically, sometimes they can stand it or not. But the majority of teens don’t really like their bodies, but why is it like that? Well, it can be because of social media, because all they see there, they take it as something they should be. They think that their skin is gross because of their pimples, and it should be soft, without pimples and like celebrities / influencers' skin. And some of them try to get rid of these “imperfections” and try to make it look like baby’s skin. The same happens with their bodies, maybe they think they’re too fat and eat less or do too much exercise to make it look good. But it can also be some unfunny jokes or insults that make them feel insecure and do all of...

WOMEN IN SCIENCE

Image
Imagine that you made a mistake while writing and you need to correct it. You should cross it out and continue. Or maybe on a rainy day you need to take off the water from the windshield. You should step out of the car and clean it. And what about going to the hospital to take a vaccine and they need more than one nurse to get vaccinated. All these things are not happening because a woman invented the solution. The tipp-ex, the windshield wiper or the syringe are a few inventions that were made by women and today we are celebrating that all the girls can be future scientists. Without them and without their contribution, the world of science, physics, chemistry, technology and our life in general would probably not be the same.

THE SWING

Image
A description of a work of Art... by Carly Glow The swing is an oil panting that was created in between the years 1767 and 1768 by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, a French artist. In this work of art, we can see a young lady in a swing and, on the grass, a man looking beneath her skirt. Its style is rococo, and it’s very detailed. In the middle of the painting there’s a woman in a big pink dress on a swing. Her feet are pointing towards a statue while her shoe is falling off. We can see that there’s a man hiding in the bushes, pointing with a hat on his hand to what’s beneath the girl’s dress. Behind her, there is a man pushing the girl. It is known that the man on the floor requested this painting taken with his mistress (the girl on the swing), in those years it was normal and pretty common. Fragonard uses soft colors, such as pink, used in the girl’s dress, green for the forest, and a little bit of yellow for the bright parts. To sum up, the painter was able to express the eroticism his clie...

THE PYRENEES: MY FAVOURITE CORNER

Image
A post by Lucas Molada Serrano . Everything is silent, the world seems to stop, and I feel like I was dreaming. All these feelings come to me when I travel through the Pyrenees.  Pyrenees are, with no doubt, my favourite corner. They are a place where I can think freely and where I can be myself. No one or nothing can annoy me, and I can be whatever I want.   Three-thousand-meter high mountains, enormous rock walls, magical waterfalls and frozen lakes are some of the landscapes you can perfectly see here. You will need to walk for many hours to get to the shelters. This is why people do not come to this incredible place, and that's why I love the Pyrenees. I have been twice to the Pyrenees, and I’m sure that I will return in the future

In each book there are one hundred stories about women and their amazing achievements. TWILIGHT

Image
A review by Alba Bonet Yllera Twilight is a breathtaking, charming novel, written by Stephenie Meyer, an amazing American writer, more than ten years ago. It’s the first book in a saga, which has the same name as its first book: Twilight. Moreover, it’s a vampire-themed saga, even though it’s also a combination of fantasy and romance. In addition, the series has a total of four books. The first one, is Twilight, the second one, New Moon, the third one, Eclipse and, the last one, is Breaking Dawn. Nevertheless, its author also wrote a very last book, which tells the whole story of the previous four books, from the point of view of another character, the boy. The setting is a small town, called Forks, Washington, USA. Firstly, the main character, “Bella” Swan, has to move from Phoenix, Arizona, where she used to live with her mother, to this aforementioned town. Her parents are divorced and, Forks, is the town where her father lives and the place where she used to go on holiday wh...

ALAN TURING: A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Image
... by Daniel Villena Lillo Alan Turing was born in 1912 and he died in 1954 in England. He is best known for his contribution to the decipherment of the Enigma machine, used by Germany in World War II to communicate securely and coordinate attacks. He grew up in a rich family and was educated since he was very young, this made him able to get a degree in mathematics in the University of Cambridge. He is also considered one of the greatest mathematicians of all time and he created the infamous Turing machine, very useful for the mathematicians at the time, making him one of the firsts computer scientists in history. When he started working for England's Government Code and Cypher School, he came up with the idea of using a code-breaking machine based on mechanical rotors to decipher the messages from Germany that were intercepted by the Allies. The Allies used the information in the deciphered messages to win the final and decisive battles from the war like the Battle of the At...

THE LIFE & ADVENTURES OF LAZARILLO DE TORMES

Image
A review by Daniel Villena Lillo The life and adventures of Lazarillo de Tormes was written in 1554. It is a very famous anonymous Spanish picaresque novel. The plot talks about the life of a child called Lázaro de Tormes, and the many owners he had. This book criticizes the religious society of the time it was written, like priests, squires and noblemen, I think this was the reason why the Spanish Inquisition forbade it. The book is presented as seven letters to an unknown person, in each letter it explains how he lived with each owner. The author expresses all of his misfortunes with humoristic mood, this made me laugh a lot during the reading, it is a bit sad at the start but with the time his luck gets better. I find it very interesting that we are not sure about the author of such an important book like this one. There are some theories but there is nothing confirmed. I enjoyed it, it is not only a novel of the classic Spanish literature, it is a novel of classic universal literat...

TEACHING ENGLISH ESSENTIALS

Image
An article by Lucía González [Nursery teacher at MITVAL]  . Nowadays, children are being educated in so many different ways, and our questions don’t stop going on around our head...How do children learn? How could we increase their curiosity? How can we help them to remember, understand or increase their knowledge? what can we do to guide their communicative English skills? what should we teach first?  But if you take on board a few essentials, there's a good chance you'll end up cherishing the experience. Here are five tips that helped me when I started out. 1. Build your understanding of how young children learn It is vital to get the approach right for children of this age. You soon realise that children learn and develop at different rates and in different ways. If we don’t understand the age group, we can end up doing more damage than good. You need to understand what to expect from the children and make sure that what you do in class or home reflects where they are in th...

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Image
An article by Carmen Alías López . The first International Women's Day celebration was held on the 19th of March in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland because of the fight for equality between men and women.  8th March  was institutionalized in 1975 by the United Nations. It has been a very important issue during the 20th century to bring to light the existing differences between both sexes such as salary, male power in the marriage, etc. There have been a lot of strikes and we have achieved prominent changes in politics and laws: in the 80s, the law in which women were free to choose to break away the marriage was approved and not a long time ago, women were free to open an account in the bank. Nowadays, feminism is a basic concept, but there are a lot of countries where women are killed for not obeying their husbands, where only boys have the right of education while girls take care of the children and the house... In these countries, women are not allowed to claim fo...

MARGARITA'S BEAUTY

Image
An article by Isabella Rodríguez. Margarita is one of my favorite places, it´s a beautiful island located southeast of the Caribbean Sea, northeast of Venezuela, north of the Araya peninsula of Sucre state, with a population close to 98.000 people. This island is surrounded by beaches; these beaches are characterized by their great beauty and quality, both sand and water. Among the beaches to visit on Isla Margarita there are all kinds of beaches, with waves and without waves, with cold and more temperate water, where you can do water sports such as surfing, scuba diving, windsurfing and kite surfing. But there are also monuments such as the Church of the Valley, the Castle of the Assumption or the fort of Juangriego. There are also parks like Parque el Agua, Laberinto tropical, Diverland. You can take a tour of the mountains, a horseback excursion in Cabatucan on the Macanao Peninsula, or visit the national park of La Restinga, where you can take a boat ride through the mangrove...
